31/07/12.. Pink hair wins the day for Hannah -

WHILE the Americans celebrated their fourth of July with fireworks and the Stars and Stripes, South Oxfordshire held a very different kind of celebration; Independents’ Day, aimed at promoting independent retailers and encouraging people to shop locally.

All four towns in the district, Thame, Wallingford, Didcot and Henley, took part in the event to encourage shoppers to visit in their local independent retailers.

With the chance to win a £20 voucher to spend in local participating businesses, shoppers were invited to use Twitter to share pictures of their purchases.

The winner in Thame was Hannah Collins who purchased a hair colouring treatment from Zen Hair Designs on Upper Street, twitting a photo of her new pink hair with two bottles of colour care products.

Hannah was presented with her voucher by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Nigel Champken-Woods and Peter Lambet, on Friday. Hannah was delighted with her voucher and said:
“I decided to enter the competition to show what a fantastic job Stevie, my hairdresser, had done and to show my support for Thame.”

Cllr Judith Nimmo-Smith, South Oxfordshire District Council Cabinet member for Economic Development, Property and Technical Services said: “Independents’ Day highlights the contribution local businesses make to our towns and cities, providing a unique character to them. Though lasting only a day, it will provide a long-term benefit in having raised the profile of our valuable independent retailers”.
